The first evidence of Gypsy Moth eegs hatching during 2008 in Shamong Township, NJ was discovered on April 20th. These are from eggs laid during 2007. Some examples are shown below.
We discovered a couple of egg masses that we missed clearing in the summer and fall of 2007. They looked like they
survived the winter without harm. We took pictures of a couple of them on April 12th, 2008,
including the one shown below. We put duct tape around
the egg mass, and tanglefoot on the duct tape. Then we watched every day. The Gypsy Moth larvae began hatching on April 20th.

One of the egg masses we found was on a board in the garage. It apparently had been deposited on the board the previous summer. We brought the board out of the garage and built a barrier of duct tape and tanglefoot around the egg mass. We then took photos every day until the eggs started to hatch and for a few days after. The gypsy moths started to hatch on April 21st, 2008. See photo sequence below:

Last summer we took photographs of egg masses that gypsy moths had laid on trees, including this tree on McKendimen Road. The egg masses were still there in the early spring of 2008. We took photographs of the gypsy moth larvae as they were hatching from these egg masses on April 22, 2008.
In 2007 we found out about using burlap strips sprayed with the insecticide Deltamethrin to kill Gypsy Moths too late to use it that year. However we did try it in the spring of 2008, with great success. See Deltamethrin.
